Plant science sector in Serbia comprises numerous of faculties and institutes.  Plant sciences are studied at the University of Belgrade, Novi Sad, Niš and Kragujevac. Institutes are state companies operating under the auspices of the Ministry of Science and Technological Development.  In the field of fundamental research, institutes focused on plant biology are the Institute for biological research “Siniša Stanković” (Plant Physiology Department), the Institute for molecular genetics and genetic engineering (Laboratory for plant molecular biology) and the Institute for multidisciplinary research (Department of Life Science), University of Belgrade. Institutes oriented to biotechnological and commercial applications are: Belgrade Maize research institute “Zemun Polje”, Institute of medicinal plant research “dr Josif Pančić” Institute of forestry Institute for plant protection and environment Institute for the application of nuclear energy Novi Sad Institute of field and vegetable crops, Institute of lowland forestry and environment Č ačak - Fruit research institute Smederevska Palanka - Institute for vegetable crops   The research interests of plant science sector in Serbia include basic and translational research in the following topics: plant biotechnology, plant growth and development, metabolism and nutrition, phytochemistry, biodiversity and conservation, evolutionary plant biology, abiotic and biotic stress and ecophysiology.
